Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is:
  • derived from wood cellulose and from cotton.
  • a water-soluble anionic polymer achieved by introducing carboxymethyl groups along the cellulose chain.
  • odourless, non-toxic and biodegradable.
  • produced in three main product categories: food grade CMC (cellulose gum), purified CMC and technical (crude) CMC.
CMC is one of the most versatile of all water-soluble hydrocolloids and has a number of important properties making it useful in many industrial applications. CMC is a multifunctional hydrocolloid and has the ability to impart several important characteristics to a formulation through its mode of action.

CMC is currently used in more than 200 known industrial applications and the number is constantly rising. The large number of publications and patents released every year further underline the versatility and interesting new possibilities of CMC.
